What is Speech
It is how we make sounds and words, Speech disorders occur in 3 areas:
  • Articulation: Incorrect productions of sounds (e.g. producing l instead of r)
  • Fluency: problems with the rhythm of our speech (e.g., stuttering/cluttering)
  • Voice disorder: problems in the use of our vocal folds and breathing (e.g., hoarseness/harshness)
 
What is Language
It is the words we use and the way we use them to share ideas and thoughts and get our needs. Language disorders occur in 2 areas:
  • Receptive: trouble understanding others
  • Expressive: trouble sharing thoughts
 
What is Social Communication
It is the social use of verbal and nonverbal communication. The disorders may affect:
  • Communicating for social purposes
  • Talking in different ways to suit the listener and setting
  • Following rules for conversation
 
What is Cognitive-Communication
It is all aspects of communication that are affected by cognition. The disorder may result in:
  • Problems organizing thoughts
  • ADHD
  • Memory problems
  • Planning
  • Problem-solving
 
What is Swallowing Disorder (Dysphagia)
It is feeding and swallowing difficulty, involving the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, or gastrointestinal junction.
 
Children and adults with different speech-language disorders are caused by:
  • Developmental disorder (e.g., autism, ADHD, Learning Difficulties)
  • Genetic syndrome (e.g., Down syndrome)
  • Hearing loss
  • Brain damage (e.g., cerebral palsy, head injury.. etc.)
  • Age-related disorders (e.g. Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, dementia. etc.)
 
Services Provided Include:
  • Administrating comprehensive screening tools
  • Conducting specific assessments
  • Providing individual intervention sessions
  • Providing group therapy sessions
